Some thoughts about Batman #27

What happens to the people from Gotham now?

The war between the Joker and the Riddler is getting more dangerous and is involving innocent people now, especially one who doesn't want to get involved.

The War of Jokes and Riddles "interlude" and is starting to showcase some of the problems from this storyline.

I have commented how solid is the set-up that Tom King is preparing for this arc, about how the build-up is pretty interesting and shows distinctive interpretations of classic villains that prepare the audience for the upcoming battle that is told from Bruce's perspective in the future. The story here is also compelling due that it tries to give more depth to a character that was seen previously as a joke and makes you feel for him and be invested in his future.

THE PROBLEM is that this is already an interlude in a story that basically hasn't started yet. Once again, the "story" itself is told from the perspective of others instead of the story happening in the actual pages which again, is something that King is obviously trying to do just to give it an unique style but I'm afraid that this might end in an unsatisfying way just like most of his Batman stories. Worst of all is that this is a two issues interlude so the proper story is going to take a while to be told. This would have worked much better as a tie-in but as an interruption? Not so much.

Also, the style can still be pretty obnxious at times.

Clay Mann handles the artwork and while his work is solid, he's no Mikel Janin and doesn't elevate King's work as much as he does.

Not bad but not promising for the future. Let's see where it goes anyway.
