Some thoughts about Trinity #12

The Trinity will have to face their dark counterpart.

Constantine, Zatanna and Deadman have been summoned by Batman to help them with a strange case but even their help might not be enough.

This story has surprisingly been building-up for a while, initially started by Cullen Bunn, at first it felt like a bunch of disjointed chapters but now they all have come together in a story written by Rob Williams.

And despite that I've my own criticisms about Bunn as a writer, I think I would have prefered his take.

Mostly because I vastly prefered the initial chapter that Bunn gave us in this book more than anything that Williams has done here (or in general to be honest) but also because there are some things here that are just wrong. At first it seems like there are some sights of brilliance here like in the opening scenes about the fun banter between Constantine, Zatanna and Deadman, characters that I've missed for a while and I'm glad that DC is addressing them as members of the Justice League Dark BUT that is quickly forgotten once that the actual characterization takes place.

The major problem being Constantine that is portrayed as a complete unlikable asshole. Mind you, that is a part of Constantine's appeal but that's it, just A PART, Williams goes to the extreme by basically making a psychopath who doesn't care about anybody (not even his recurring love interest Zatanna to whom he has showed care in the past). I already tend to dislike portrayals about John that present him as a douchebag since he's more complex than that and Williams even manages to top those.

Add the fact that apparently Jason Todd wants to kill Batman and you just get a quite off issue.

V. Ken Marion's artwork on the other hand, is quite good, probably one of his most polished efforts so far, full of beautiful characters and vibrant scenes.

Didn't really dig this one, not sure what to expect next.
