Some thoughts about Sideways Annual #1
Sideways and Superman will have to find a way to escape.Derek has found a man who everyone has forgotten and now both will have to help the Seven Soldiers of Victory to finish this battle.
I guess I was just expecting more from this Annual and story as a whole.
Grant Morrison joins Dan Didio here to tell the story about the team-up between Sideways and New 52 Superman. During the last issue, I was very confused because of the appearance of this particular Superman but now with the appearance of Morrison it all makes sense, same case with the role of the Seven Soldiers of Victory and we do get a few classic Morrison's traits here. The fact that Superman says that he was kept prisoner because they "didn't like his attitude" is typical meta Morrison and there are a few other examples about how the character was received as a whole.
ON THE OTHER HAND, the plot itself is rather by the numbers and Superman doesn't have enough of a role to justify his appearance, not to mention that his introduction wasn't as strong as it could have been due that they didn't go meta enough, they didn't try to give a true explanation about why all of this happened or how Superman was separated from his current form. Speaking of which, the Seven Soldier's appearance was also wasted due that his themes and mythos were not implemented as profoundly as they could have been, the story would have been the same if any other team was implemented here.
Will Conrad and Cliff Richards share the pencils and they're fairly consistent with their characters and storytelling.
Aside from that, big waste of potential. Can't recommend.
