Some thoughts about Jinny Hex Special #1

Jinny Hex will have to discover who her family truly is.

Jinny has just returned home after her adventures with Young Justice and a stranger with a connection to her mother will try to gain her confidence which might not be for the better.

Yes, I absolutely hated Brian Bendis' Young Justice because of how slow and pointless it ultimately was but I admitedly liked the premise of Jinny Hex and I felt she was really underutilized during Bendis' run (just like everyone else). Magdalene Visaggio brings a special all about her though and while is not perfect, it does a good job at making you more invested into the character.

The plot is centered around Jinny meeting a few old friends only to encounter a man who claims to be her father. The story is pretty predictable in terms of characters because you just know what's actually going to happen and unfortunately Visaggio doesn't offer many surprises about that. That being said, I think the character work compensates for it due that there are a few new developments about Jinny like her dorker side and how her mother recently passed away because of cancer (which is something I know is really painful considering that my own mother currently suffers from it).

Also, while there are no surprises concerning how the new characters behave, there are a few intriguing twists, particularly because the story goes into supernatural territory quite quickly, showing a bigger background for Jinny and how all of these is connected to her ancestor, Jonah Hex. In that regard, the special is pretty satisfying.

Gleb Melnikov handles the art and the semi-cartoony style is pretty good at following the script and depicting expressions.

Good read overall, hope to see more of Jinny in the future.
