Some thoughts about Batgirls #1

What is the Batgirls's new mission?

Barbara, Cassandra and Stephanie have moved out to a new apartment where they believe they can continue her vigilante work but what they don't realize yet is that old enemies will always follow them.

Okay, I have been asking this for a while now.

Stephanie Brown has been one of my favorite characters since she starred in her own Batgirl title written by Bryan Q. Miller in which she was entertaining, relatable and especially funny. Her return since her disappearance after the reboot many years ago was... not the best since she suffered from a lot of bad characterization (Mostly done by James Tynion IV) and erratic appearances. Now both Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad are willing to bring the full team of all the different Batgirls together and while the result is not bad, is not that great either.

First of all, this continues the set-up that the writers have been doing in other Batbooks which I haven't been really following but to be fair, is not like they're particularly necessary to understand what's happening here since the creative team does an appropriate job at creating a brand new direction for the characters without too much baggage.

I think the slice of life aspects are the most enjoyable here overall due that the authors create an adequate dynamic between the full cast and they all sound on-point for the most part, I really dig the interactions between Steph and Cass due that their personalities contrast nicely.

I'm less excited about bringing back material from the Fear State event which it was a pretty forgettable idea and crossover and is better left forgotten in the past. Hopefully after it, we can start seeing new concepts.

The art is spectacular though. Jorge Corona's work has a lot of style and energy which is quite frankly, perfect for this sort of book, especially for a Stephanie Brown book, the expressions and layouts are pretty detailed and creative.

So, the opening chapter has fine characterization, premise and content so in that sense everything is... okay, just okay. This might be because I haven't been that impressed with Cloonan/Conrad's overall work but I just don't feel anything about this that I really love yet, I want to like this, is the kind of direction I would totally be into into but I feel like it needs a bit more. Hopefully it will get more interesting in the future.
