Some thoughts about JSA #1
Whatever happened to the Justice Society of America?
The oldest members of the team have disappeared and the youngest members are trying to figure out where they are while they're dealing with a threat that is escalating to the point that is affecting their own people.
I have mentioned several times before that the last reboot of the JSA by Geoff Johns was a disappointment for the most part, it started with great potential but quickly devolved in decompressed and uninteresting stories that just went nowhere and is a real shame because I really wanted someone to tell new stories about a team with such rich history.
Fortunately, one of my favorite writers is coming to save the situation. Jeff Lemire is back at DC to write the JSA of all things, Lemire always had an unique take for each of the properties he works on and so far I must that I'm all for it.
Lemire does something very smart in this opening chapter since he separates the classic members of the JSA while giving the younger characters their time to shine (and appropriately naming them Infinity Inc.). This allows for a lot of the characters who didn't have much time in the spotlight to develop (and I'm glad that one of them is Yolanda Montez since it was a real shame that she barely did anything during Johns' run despite he brought her back) and create a new status quo with enough potential to be invested in it.
Just like I'm assuming a lot of the other All In titles, this is following the events of the Absolute Power crossover but unlike the few titles I've read following that, it just uses a few key points of that story to create character and story development so Lemire did it pretty new reader-friendly. Perfect jumping on point.
The plot itself moves at a fast enough pace despite that the issue is mostly focused on the cast and creates an intriguing cliffhanger that explains a lot of the actions of some of them while also presenting compelling future stories involving classic antagonists.
Diego Olortegui handles the art and he makes the story even better thanks to the beautiful, expressive characters and clear storytelling.
Promising beginning, can't wait to see more.
