Whatever happened to Batman after being broken?

In a different dark universe, Bruce was fully replaced by Azrael and that turned the world into a worse place. Now their only hope relies in old enemies but there might not be any hope at all.

Even more stories about Dark Multiverse are arriving and I think I have mentioned before many times that I'm pretty damn tired of the whole Dark Multiverse, especially the Batman who Laughs, so I wasn't really anticipating this one-shots. That being said, this was still surprisingly solid.

Scott Snyder and Kyle Higgins reunite to write about Batman and I must say that I'm happy to see Higgins once again since to me he was one of the best companions Snyder had (way better than James Tynion IV). In this reality from the Dark Multiverse though, Jean-Paul Valley became Batman full time and the writers play with such idea. The themes from the original Knightfall storyline are brought back like the fact that Jean-Paul has a fragile psyche which makes him go paranoid and overly-violent and this is especially clear once that we see the horrible things he did to Bruce.

The story has a nice sense of escalation and starts picking up once that the unlikeliest saviors come for Gotham and try to revive the true Batman. All of this seems like it's going to end on a happy note only for the writers to remind us that this is the Dark Multiverse and things never end well.

Javier Fernandez handles the art and he's really good at storytelling and captures the gritty tone of the plot perfectly.

Better than expected, hope the rest of the one-shots are just as good.
