Is Jace Fox truly ready to become the next Batman?

Jace has been traveling around the world to try to gain the same experience that Bruce did but even then, he will realize that there's still much to learn and he will have to learn fast.

I have been missing several series lately but I purposely skipped John Ridley's The Next Batman: Second Son because of its Digital First nature despite of really digging his Future State work featuring Jace Fox and this brand new series seems to continue the same solid direction.

I'm probably missing some details because I didn't check Second Son but Ridley is following many of the same themes that made his previous work so enjoyable. Jace is still a pretty relatable and likable protagonist who you immediately cheer for, this rarely happens with new characters, particularly those who replace classic heroes in popular mantles. The way how he always tries to improve himself to earn the name he's inheriting is admirable and the struggles he endures make him much more understandable.

The supporting cast is one of the biggest aspects that differentiate this incarnation from classic Batman. The addition of Jace's family makes the dynamic much closer than ever, sure, Bruce always had a "family" in its own regard but here the closeness feels much more real because of the history the characters have. The political angle is also further explored in a way that makes you engaged about the future of the city.

The story is most definitely a set-up for bigger events yet to come but it gets the job done and hopefully next issue makes the plot more interesting.

Travel Foreman handles the art and I admitedly didn't recognize his work here, it almost seemed a bit typical at times, far from the bizarre look he created during his Animal Man run but again, it gets the job done in terms of storytelling.

Decent beginning, let's see how things continue.
