Some thoughts about Aquaman/Justice League: Drowned Earth #1
What is Aquaman's fate? The Justice League have realized the true nature of the Sea Gods and now they will need to stop this war once for all but Black Manta won't make things any easier.
This crossover comes to a conclusion and I'm happy to say that, unlike previous events written by Scott Snyder, this one proves to be much more successful.
What do I mean by that? Well, as I've mentioned in the past, stories like Metal and No Justice were mostly vehicles to set-up future directions for the entire DCU. Drowned Earth however, is much more centered around the ongoing story and threat and even delivers a few interesting twists along the way that makes you question the whole nature of this fight and the antagonists.
The fact that it has been an Aquaman-focused crossover made things more interesting for me as well and Snyder knew how to give Arthur and his universe respect by expanding the mythos and creating solid portrayals for the cast. Even villains like Black Manta are elevated to give them a much more important role although his characterization is not as complex as I would have hoped for since he's still the same ambitious pirate who is just going after a bigger objective, maybe he will fare better in the future.
Another thing that makes this crossover a better experience is that at the end is much more respectful to the reader because it doesn't stop the story halfway to start delivering hints about the future. Yes, there's still a set-up for the new upcoming Aquaman direction but is rather short while the whole issue is mostly dedicated to the ongoing plot which makes the resolution much more satisfying as a whole.
Francis Manapul, Howard Porter and Scott Godlewski share the pencils and they're all do a good job during their respective scenes, particularly Manapul due to his beautiful style.
Pretty good conclusion overall, hope following events are just like this.
