After one of his many experiments, Lex has found out that he has a bigger destiny awaiting him but only if he's willing to do his worst.
Well, this one worked in quite a few levels but in others not so much.
For one, James Tynion IV replaces Scott Snyder is this one-and-done story and while that might send a few red flags, it wasn't as bad as one would expect. The story is actually a prelude to the one that Snyder has been telling and thankfully Tynion gives a justifiable motivation for Luthor and the rest to take their current path. Not only that, but Tynion also manages to create an imposing presence for most of the villains here while also being accurate to their classic portrayals.
That being said, this issue also suffers from the usual problem of this series, the third person narration. Sure, I believe that Tynion is just following the direction that Snyder gave the book but at the same time, I think such narration is even more abundant here to the point of being asphyxiating.
Doug Mahnke handles the pencils and his work is magnificent as usual with extremely detailed characters and environments along with strong storytelling.
I would say that I liked this issue overall but it could have been much better.
